Rather than just including names, dates and events, Grotta said his biography tries to provide a context for the author’s life and times. “It’s sort of an alternative, non-authorized, non-official biography that gives a literary perspective, a roadmap of what Tolkien wrote,” explains Grotta, 57, of Newfoundland, Wayne County, who will speak Saturday at the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group conference in Phillipsburg, N.J. And at one time, Grotta’s unauthorized biography of the man behind Middle Earth was the book most stolen off library shelves. For the past quarter-century, it has been in print continuously, has been issued in both paperback and hardcover and has been translated into numerous languages.
